Starston has several entries in the Domesday book. The church of St. Margaret's dates from around 1300 although evidence of an earlier building is present. The tower and chancel date to the 15th century and are in the perpendicular style. There is a ring of six bells in the tower Sunday ringing and practice by arrangements, ring the tower captain Herbert Websdell (01379 853967)

St. Margaret's prides itself on the use of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer for its major Sunday services where Sung Matins is particularly popular. Perhaps considering itself 'low church' an 'open table' policy is practiced whereby worshippers of other Christian denominations are welcome to partake of the sacraments.

Our regular Sunday services are shown below but these may vary according to the time or season. Please go to the services page for full and up-to-date information.

Open Churches Week - St Margaret’s Church Starston

St Margaret’s Church, Starston will be open for visitors each day from Saturday 31st July to Saturday 7th August, between and .

Family and local history will be the theme this year.  Rosemary Steer has just completed two new indexes to add to the existing transcript of the Starston marriage register 1838-2006.  The gravestone inscriptions in the churchyard, dating from 1696, have been transcribed, with handy plans so the graves can easily be located.    The burial registers from 1747 have also been indexed and linked with the gravestone inscriptions where possible.  All these indexes will be available in the church to help those with Starston connections trace their ancestors.

There will be an exhibition in the church all week about the local men who were killed in the 1st and 2nd World Wars together with more detailed information about each Starston man who died.  This will be followed by an illustrated talk by Rosemary Steer in the Jubilee Hall, Starston on Tracing Your First World War Ancestors on Saturday 7th August at in aid of St Margaret’s Church.  Tickets are £6.50, including cheese and wine after the talk, available by ringing 01379 854385 or 01379 852401.

On Saturday 7th August at in the Jubilee Hall, Starston, Rosemary Steer will be giving an illustrated talk about tracing your First World War ancestors in aid of Starston Church.  Rosemary has researched her own family history, including tracing details of her two great uncles who were killed in the First World War.  One was killed on the Somme, the other was a dockyard shipwright killed when HMS Princess Irene exploded in 1915 in Sheerness Harbour.  Rosemary has also researched the lives and deaths of the Starston men killed in both world wars.   Using examples from her own family and from Starston, Rosemary will show how to tackle your own research.  The illustrated talk will be followed by cheese and wine and a chance for questions.
